St John’s Community Centre is a Faith Based Organization that is committed to the social development of vulnerable groups in urban and rural areas by uplifting their spiritual, economic and social conditions guided by the Christian spirit of “Bearing one another’s burden” Positively transforming lives through empowerment St John’s Community Centre aims to help women, youth and children to address the challenges caused by extreme poverty. This is achieved through capacity building, community sensitization. Community awareness focuses on mobilizing savings amongst the “poorest of the poor” through the Self Help Group approach, sensitization on the civic rights and responsibilities of citizens as well as awareness on sanitation and hygiene. Promotion of best practices Due to the wealth of experience and competencies in responding to the HIV/AIDS challenge in Pumwani informal settlement areas, St John’s Community Centre, through the OVC program, has supported community based organizations in Nairobi, Eastern, Central, Western and Nyanza provinces to provide psycho-social support to OVCs through establishment of school and community clubs. The Centre has also been at the forefront of promoting stigma reduction among Christians by enabling select parishes in the Anglican Church of Kenya-Diocese of Nairobi to provide appropriate HIV/AIDS care and support services. Training and Education The Non Formal school provides an opportunity for out of school as well as OVCs to acquire quality education. The school recognizes that children have rights, including the right to have their opinions taken into account in decisions that concern them. Child participation is enhanced in the children’s parliament. The Business and Training Institute as well as the Garment making school provides an opportunity for students to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to build self-reliance Child development and rehabilitation SJCC works with community clubs and satellite schools to improve children participation and strengthen community’s capability to address cases of child rights violation. St John’s aims at reducing child mortality by preventing diseases and other conditions, such as malnutrition, that lead to poor child development and premature death in the Kiambiyu slums. Youth development SJCC works to holistically empower youth in Pumwani so that they can be self-reliant. The empowerment involves building their capacities to initiate and engage in constructive endeavors that will advance them economically, spiritually, mentally and intellectually. This involves sponsorship of youth for courses, character formation and search for youth talents and developing them. Over 600 youth in Pumwani have acquired various skills and majority are gainfully engaged.
